Common Research Formulas
A quick reference for frequently used statistical formulas in academic research.
Standard Deviation

σ = √[ Σ(xi - μ)² / N ]

Measures the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of values.
Margin of Error

E = Z * (σ / √n)

The amount of error that can be tolerated in a study, often expressed as a percentage.
Confidence Interval

CI = x̄ ± Z * (σ / √n)

A range of values that you're fairly sure your true value lies in.
Chi-Square Test

χ² = Σ [ (O - E)² / E ]

Used to compare observed results with expected results.
t-Test

t = (x̄₁ - x̄₂) / √[ (s₁²/n₁) + (s₂²/n₂) ]

Used to determine if there is a significant difference between the means of two groups.
Correlation Coefficient (r)

r = [ n(Σxy) - (Σx)(Σy) ] / √[ [nΣx² - (Σx)²] [nΣy² - (Σy)²] ]

Measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables.
